Many of you will remember the day in April 1980 when young graduate lawyer Barbra Schlifer was brutally sexually assaulted and killed in the basement of her Toronto apartment building. Five years later, the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic was established to provide therapy to abused women. Since then it has grown in size and significance with a budget of more than $3 million, and today assists more than 4,000 women yearly.

One of its offshoot services is a workshop program at the Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art in Toronto where an art therapist and a sculptural ceramist help assaulted women to heal themselves by hand building works in clay. To mark its tenth anniversary, the Gardiner hosted a stunning exhibition this spring, Transformation by Fire, which some of our members attended.
We have invited art therapist Suzanne Thomson and ceramist Susan Low-Beer to talk about how the program functions and present a DVD of the women at work. You will be amazed at and moved by the results.

Welcome Back Social and Registration
Please bring a friend or neighbour to the September meeting! As our bylaws currently state that membership is open to "Any woman who supports the goals of CFUW", we can invite someone we feel would be an asset to the group without having to ask about their academic qualifications. We're planning to showcase all we do at every level of CFUW, so this is good opportunity for you to find new reasons for already being a member and for a potential member to learn about all the advocacy and work of our great group!
The first part of our meeting will be a social gathering. We can catch up with friends we haven't seen all summer, look after handing in our membership application, Interest Group form and fees if we haven't yet had a chance to do so, and hopefully introduce potential members to interest group leaders or members and welcome new members to our club.
The second part of the meeting will be a presentation about CFUW. We plan to highlight a little of our history, explain what we do as a group, and what happens at all the other levels. What is Ontario Council all about? What happens provincially among CFUW groups? What happens with the resolutions which are passed at the National AGM? What is the role of the National Office? What happens at IFUW and who attends these conferences? We'll try to keep it brief but interesting and hope you'll learn something new and come away with a clearer understanding of what we do.
What exactly is CFUW? Click here for a summary of the presentation given by our president at this meeting.

Mark Fenske “The Winner’s Brain”
Mark explores the surprising science behind motivation, focus, and extraordinary achievement.

Contrary to popular belief, winning in life has little to do with IQ, your circumstances, your financial resources, or even luck. But it has everything to do with creating a failure-resistant brain. Every time you think a thought, feel an emotion, or execute a behavior, your neurocircuitry changes, and the good news is you can take charge of this process. Yes, the key to success really is all in your head.
Mark Fenske, PhD, is a neuroscientist and Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Guelph. A former faculty member at Harvard MedicalSchool
and Massachusetts General Hospital, his research combines neuroimaging techniques with studies of human behaviour to examine factors that are critical for healthy cognitive and
emotional functioning. His writing, teaching, and public speaking are likewise aimed at helping others understand that learning a bit about the brain can be helpful in enhancing performance and well-being. Dr. Fenske's efforts to translate scientific findings and make them accessible to the public at large includes the bestselling book, 'The Winner's Brain: 8 Strategies Great Minds Use to Achieve Success' and his popular 'Better Brain' column, which regularly appeared in the Globe & Mail.

Eva Stachniak “Winter Palace: A Novel of Catherine the Great”
This Canadian author discusses her recent bestseller.

Catherine the Great is one of history’s most fascinating rulers—a monarch whose 34-year reign brought Russia into the modern industrial world, whose affairs were the scandal of her court, and who truly embodied the ideals of the Enlightenment. Yet there are no other novels in print on Catherine the Great. Now, drawing on letters, diaries, and on-the-ground research in St. Petersburg, Peterhof, and Tsarskoye Selo, award-winning author Eva Stachniak delivers a passionate novel that illuminates the early life of one of history’s most enigmatic and powerful women. THE WINTER PALACE: A Novel of Catherine the Great tells the epic story of Catherine’s improbable rise to power, as seen through the ever-watchful eyes of an
all-but-invisible servant close to the throne.
Tonight Eva discusses what life was like in the Russian court at the time, especially for women. Eva, a dedicated researcher, explains what drew her to write about Catherine the Great.

Frank Ricciuti:
Guiding Third World Leaders to Develop Sustainable Economies

Based on his experiences in Peru, Columbia and Guyana, Mr. Riccuiti will focus on how the corporate world can enhance the economic well being of a country while at the same time advancing the development of its people. He explains how this can work alongside, and in a complimentary way, with the real role of NGO’s. Using the corporate sector to develop the economic growth must, almost by definition, cope with numerous social issues. Issues to consider are cultural differences, national and local traditions, environmental issues, development of local personnel, government relations, taxation and the perception of exploitation.
Mr. Frank Ricciuti is currently Chairman, President and CEO of International Resources Investment Corporation, an advisory company to Colombian natural resources companies. During his corporate career, Mr. Ricciuti has served on the Board of at least 25 not-for-profit and public corporations. He was an advisor to the government of Columbia and advised numerous mining companies in Columbia, Peru and Guyana. Mr. Ricciuti earned a degree in engineering technology from Ryerson University, a Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan Technological University and an MBA from York University.
