THE BINA ROY PROJECT:
SUPPORTING THE INITIATIVE TO STOP VIOLENCE AGAINST GIRLS AND WOMEN IN SIERRA LEONE

2013 - 14 APPEAL

Picture
Bina Roy was the first Asian President of IFUW.  She believed in forging strong and supportive links between member countries in IFUW and encouraged the implementation of projects that furthered this aim.   In 1978, IFUW established the Counterpart Aid Program and this has since been renamed to honour Bina Roy.

Every year, IFUW member countries are invited to submit proposals and some of these are selected for support.  Last year one of the projects is in Sierra Leone.

The aim of the Sierra Leone project is to raise awareness of the types of violence experienced by girls, in schools and communities, and the impact this has on their right to education.  This project has  particular appeal to our Issues Group as one of our members, Fatmatta Kanu, is from Sierra Leone.  At our last meeting,  Fatmatta was our ‘guest’ speaker and shared her knowledge of the country and provided a context for the project.
