NEWS FROM THE COALITION FOR GUN CONTROL - ONTARIO DATA
URGENT HELP Needed to tell Ontario to fight for registry data
Dear Regional Directors,
Please forward this important message "News from the Coalition for Gun Control " to your clubs.
Last spring a letter from Ontario Council was forwarded to the Provincial Government on saving the registry data.
The responses from the Premier, the Attorney General and Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services were all supportive of saving the national long-gun registry.
Minister Madeleine Meilleur stated, the provincial government had made every effort to keep the information it contains. However, Ontario would not be creating a separate provincial long-gun registry and therefore was also not considering further legal action at that time. Dated June 18 2012.
In light of the recent decision by the Quebec courts to protect their data, you are asked to send in letters of support, and encourage the Ontario governmentnt to take action on saving this data.

News from the Coalition for Gun Control
We need your help URGENTLY to tell the Ontario that this is not acceptable and that Ontario must take action before it's too late. Please call Premier Dalton McGuinty's office at 416-325-1941 to tell him that he needs to step up and fight for Ontario's data. Contact information to give your MPP the same message can be found here.
Time is getting short. The deletion of the data is set to begin in less than two weeks for all but the information for Quebec. While women's groups have taken action in absence of government leadership, this data will help to protect all Ontarians. We need the government to know that their silence will have consequences. Please call and voice your support for action on this issue. Tell them:
There are more 2.1 million long-guns in Ontario and the data on those guns is useful to police, providing a starting point for investigations, helping to bring criminals to justice and supporting the prosecution of gun-related crime.
Without the registry and records of sales, long-guns are now completely untraceable in Ontario. On top of the criminal implications above, there is also less incentive for gun owners to report thefts or store their guns responsibly when the gun can no longer be traced back to them.
The Quebec government stood up for public safety in their province and was victorious. Ontario should do the same. The Quebec Court decision reaffirms the fact that the data on guns is useful, that the province which contributed to collecting it is entitled to keep it and that it is in the interests of public safety to maintain it.
While the government of Ontario has refused to take action, Ontario public safety experts and victims of gun violence, along with the cities of Toronto and Mississauga and the Region of Waterloo called for the data to be saved in the interest of public safety.
Thanks so much for your help and support!
